The state of Craft CMS | 2024

Craft CMS is steadily gaining more and more traction with an increasing number of agencies adopting Craft as their go-to CMS and many clients now actively asking for it.

Craft is used by some of the world's leading brands including SONOS, Netflix, Wrangler, IKEA, Adidas and Ella’s Kitchen (one of our own - check it out). This adoption by high-profile companies highlights Craft’s growing reputation as THE content management platform of choice for businesses of all sizes, from SMEs to global enterprises, who want a highly tailored and bespoke solution.

At Abstrakt we’ve been using Craft for close to a decade and are proud to be a Verified Craft partner - it’s all we build on and that’s for a reason. We could talk for hours about the benefits of Craft and have many articles about why developers and content managers alike love it.

But today, I thought I’d take an impartial look at the state of Craft in 2024 and what the data is showing us…

1. Growth in popularity
At last count, 48,847 sites are running on Craft globally, with 5,984 (over 12%) in the UK. In 2023, it was recorded that the number of websites using Craft increased by over 50% and it's continuing to go up!

2. Increase in enterprise adoption
In 2024, Craft saw a 22% increase in adoption by global enterprises and high-traffic sites (sites receiving over 1 million monthly visitors), with major brands in sectors that include finance, healthcare, and retail (thank you, Craft Commerce) moving onto the platform.

3. Increasingly trusted by leading agencies
More than 50% of the top 100 digital agencies globally are now using Craft as their go-to CMS, especially for high-end and complex website projects that require high levels of customisation.

4. More award-winning sites
Over 200 Craft websites have won prestigious web design and development awards, including Awwwards, Webby Awards, and CSS Design Awards - no surprise really, bearing in mind point 3 (above).

5. eCommerce growth
Over the last year, there has been a 35% uptick in Craft Commerce adoption. Craft Commerce is only a few years old but it is a serious competitor to dedicated eCommerce platforms such as Magento and Shopify, especially for sites that need to seamlessly combine content and commerce.

6. Enhanced security
Craft has consistently ranked in the top tier for security and there were no major vulnerabilities reported in 2023/2024, thanks to Craft’s built-in security measures and regular updates.

7. Expansion of plugin store
The Craft plugin store has expanded significantly over the years, with hundreds of plugins currently available and is growing all the time. And because they have to be updated with new Craft releases they are all verified and supported - BIG plus!

8. Uptick in multi-site applications
Craft has seen a 30% rise in multi-language site implementations in 2024. With good reason - Craft has multi-site, multi-lingual baked-in and supports over 40 languages!

9. Performance enhancements
Craft 5 was released in early 2024 delivering performance enhancements that have reduced page load times by 20% on average across various hosting environments, which is great for user experience and ranking organically.

10. Global Community Growth
The Craft community is growing all the time, with a 30% increase in international developers using Craft this year. And they love it! In a 2024 survey of over 2,000 web developers, 85% reported that they were satisfied or highly satisfied with Craft.

Stats from BuiltWith Sept 2024.

Pretty convincing data right? As an agency, we are all in on Craft and are confident that it will only get better, stronger, and bigger!

Our clients love working with Craft...

This is the sixth website I’ve delivered over 12 years and I have used Craft as a CMS in 2017 and 2020 and now in 2024, on its latest version, Craft 5. For me, it’s the best CMS on the market. I can honestly say that working with Abstrakt has been the best experience out of all of them, too. From the outset, it was a true collaborative partnership.
