Micro-Moments, Max Impact

Designing for short attention spans.
Today, a lot of users scroll faster than they breathe, and so the window to make an impression has shrunk to milliseconds. You don’t have time to explain, you only have time to evoke. This is the sweet spot for great digital branding: in the micro-moments that spark emotion and meaning to consumers in an instant.
Let’s face it: attention spans are short, and expectations are high. We’re not just competing with other brands. We’re competing with feeds, notifications, social media apps— the entire internet!
Most people decide whether to stay on a website or app in under 3 seconds. That decision isn’t logical— it’s emotional. It's based on how something feels, not what it says, and whether they’re able to trust a website, if it’s even loaded at all.
And that’s exactly where design earns its keep.
Designing the detail
At Abstrakt, we’re fascinated by how small design details—animations, transitions, illustrated flourishes—can shift perception entirely. This could be in the form of a loading animation that makes you smile, or a product card interaction that feels tactile and satisfying. These moments tell you more about a brand’s personality than any paragraph of copy ever could.
Think more about feeling
Designing for micro-moments means shifting from a mindset of features and sections to one of feelings and flow.
When you’re prototyping an animation, ask yourself the following:
How can it move in a way that reinforces tone?
Will this be remembered and surprise and delight the user?
Does the component need to animate to convey emotion, or are you adding animation for the sake of it?
When done in the right way, a website can feel alive and invite interaction. When it feels flat, consumers will scroll right past, looking for something that encourages and sparks emotion.
Tools that can get you started
We work with tools like Spline and Rive to bring these interactions to life.
Rive
Rive is a 2D interactive design and animation tool, used for creating animations for digital interfaces like websites, games, and apps. Animations are exported as code-friendly files, which can then be integrated easily.
Spline
Spline is a 3D design platform that enables creators to design, build, and ship interactive experiences across multiple platforms. Whilst these are not as file-efficient as using 2D animations, it uses <iframe> embed files so we can still maximise your website performance without compromising visual finesse.
Whether you’re trying to create a showstopping animation or simply create smart hover effects, these tools are brilliant in leveling up digital designs and creating custom interactions and experiences.
